Europe’s oldest mountain race!

The Trail des Dents-du-Midi is a loop around a unique mountain range, which was originally surveyed by the Swiss army for troop training purposes in the early 1960s. The Trail des Dents-du-Midi, the pioneer of Valais walking tours, owes its reputation to the marathon it ran for over 40 years. Since then, it has become a popular race. It is through its sporting achievements that the massif has earned its title of nobility. The first official race took place in 1964, a 44km race starting from Vérossaz.

Birth of the “Tour des Dents-du-Midi” in 1968

The “Tour des Dents-du-Midi” would never have existed without this marathon! Our hiking tour was surveyed and tested in 1962 by Fernand Jordan and organized as a test race by the Daviaz Ski Club in 1963. These mountains had the honor of hosting the world’s first high mountain walking race. In 1968, in view of the success of this competition, a study was carried out. Its aim was to create a hiking trail around the Dents-du-Midi.

Following the success of the first editions of the Marathon des Dents du Midi in 1969, the route was developed into a hiking trail.
